Black Elm Furniture
Black elm uses the same wood as our natural elm pieces, with a dark finish that makes the shapes feel heavier and more graphic. The open grain and the texture of the wood still come through, so the surface never looks flat.
The collection includes four-door sideboards, two-door and six-drawer cabinets, a tall armoire for bedrooms and entries, and a small carved Senufo stool. They look especially good against white or plaster walls, warm wood floors and natural linen.
For the same designs in the natural tone of the wood, see Elm Sideboards & Buffets.
FAQ
Is black elm a different wood from natural elm?
No. The black pieces are made from the same elm as our natural pieces. The difference is the finish, which darkens the surface while leaving the grain and texture visible.
Will the black finish show wear?
With daily use, edges and handles can soften and show a little of the wood underneath over time. On elm that kind of wear tends to look natural rather than damaged. Use coasters, lift objects instead of sliding them, and wipe spills quickly to keep the finish even.
What colors go with black elm furniture?
Black elm works with white, cream and warm plaster walls, natural wood floors, and materials like linen, jute, stone and stoneware. Brass or bronze details and green plants add warmth. In a room with a lot of dark pieces, lighter rugs and textiles keep it from feeling heavy.
Does black elm work in a small room?
Yes, if you keep the rest of the room light. A single black sideboard or cabinet against a pale wall becomes the focal point and gives the room some weight. Pair it with light upholstery, a pale rug and open space around it.
